Project «Information and Education Campaign ‘Climate Change and Health’ (2010-2012)»
Introduction: Over the years, the negative consequences of climate change affecting the health and well-being of the local population have become evident. The project «Information and Education Campaign ‘Climate Change and Health'» was launched from 2010 to 2012 with the goal of increasing the local population’s capacity for adaptation and mitigation of climate-change impacts and raising awareness of the importance of preserving biological diversity. The project focused on training and outreach among staff of local organizations working in public health in seven regions of Kyrgyzstan.
Main project goal: The main goal of this project was:
Increasing the local population’s capacity for adaptation and mitigation of climate change;
Raising awareness of the importance of preserving biological diversity.
Main project ideas: The project provided for a joint information and education campaign on climate change, biodiversity conservation, and public health.
Project activities: The project included the following key areas of activity:
Training and outreach among staff of 140 regional health committees: the project organized training and information events for health-sector staff to prepare them for effective adaptation and mitigation of the impact of climate change on public health.
Training and outreach among 980 medical and obstetric stations: the project also included training and information work with medical institutions and medical workers to ensure better readiness to serve patients under changing climate conditions.
Training and outreach among 150 representatives of 52 local sanitary and epidemiological control centers: the project also engaged representatives of sanitary and epidemiological services to strengthen measures for monitoring and managing public health in the context of a changing climate.
Conclusion: The project «Information and Education Campaign ‘Climate Change and Health'» focused its efforts on preparing and informing health specialists and organizations about the impact of climate change on health and methods of adaptation, as well as on the importance of preserving biological diversity. This project was an important step in strengthening the public health sector and preparing the local population for the challenges of climate change in Kyrgyzstan.
