Information and Education Campaign "Environmental Rights for Women and Children"

Project «Information and Education Campaign ‘Environmental Rights for Women and Children’ (2011-2012)»

Introduction: The project «Environmental Rights for Women and Children» was implemented from 2011 to 2012 in Kyrgyzstan with the goal of raising public awareness, especially among women and children, of the importance of environmental safety and protection from environmental risks. Kyrgyzstan’s growing participation in world trade systems became a challenge, as it created the risk that products and goods manufactured without regard for environmental risks would appear on the country’s market.

Main problems: Kyrgyzstan had a weak system of product safety control and customs inspection. This left the local market vulnerable to the appearance of dangerous food products and consumer goods. The problem also concerned dangerous tableware containing toxic substances, children’s toys, and food products with harmful additives.

Main project goal: The project’s main goal was to increase the protection of vulnerable groups, particularly women and children, from environmental risks by conducting an information campaign and discussing measures to ensure environmental safety and protection.

Project activities: The project included the following key areas of activity:
Public information campaign: the project’s main tool was an information campaign aimed at raising public awareness, especially among women and children, of environmental risks and measures to reduce them. This campaign included training and information-dissemination activities.
Engagement with procurement managers at public institutions: the project also engaged with procurement managers at government and public organizations to discuss measures and policies aimed at ensuring environmental safety in the procurement of goods and products.
Cooperation with Members of Parliament: the project also cooperated with Members of Parliament to discuss and support special measures to protect the environmental rights of women and children, including aspects of environmental safety and legislative protection.

Conclusion: The project «Information and Education Campaign ‘Environmental Rights for Women and Children'» was aimed at improving environmental awareness and protecting women and children from environmental risks amid a weak system of product and goods safety control in Kyrgyzstan. This project played an important role in raising environmental awareness and ensuring consumer safety.
