The research team of the Environmental Movement «BIOM,» together with PAN UK and the Secretariat of the Rotterdam Convention, conducted a comprehensive study of the consequences of using obsolete pesticides and their impact on vulnerable target groups in rural areas of the Jalal-Abad, Osh, and Chui regions of Kyrgyzstan. Over 200 respondents from 13 villages were surveyed as part of this project, including women, men, and children of various ages.
The study addressed issues related to the purchase, use, and disposal of pesticides. It found that farmers in Kyrgyzstan have limited understanding of the chemicals they use and their potential harmful health effects. This leads to careless handling of hazardous chemicals and failure to meet standard safety requirements when working with them.
The project aimed to raise awareness and educate farmers and the public about the risks associated with pesticide use, and to help improve safety when handling chemicals. This was aimed at protecting public health and preserving the country’s gene pool.
