In May 2012, with assistance from FFI, SLN, and «Panthera,» and with support from the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic (hereinafter — SAEPF), an open meeting was organized with the participation of all stakeholders to develop drafts of the National Strategy and Action Plan for Snow Leopard Conservation in the Kyrgyz Republic.
As part of this event, a working group was formed, including representatives of SAEPF, NABU, FFI, SET, «Aleine,» and the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, the result of whose joint work is the Strategy.
The Strategy’s goal is:
— to preserve and restore the number and habitat range of the snow leopard in Kyrgyzstan.
The Strategy’s main objectives:
— reducing poaching of the snow leopard and its prey base (wild ungulates);
— regulating the use of high-mountain pastures in accordance with the Law of the Kyrgyz Republic «On Pastures»;
— reducing the negative impact of the mining industry on the environment;
— improving the legislative, institutional, and economic framework for snow leopard conservation as part of biodiversity conservation;
— disseminating information on snow leopard conservation;
— developing programs for researching and monitoring the state of the snow leopard;
— expanding the network and optimizing the activities of specially protected natural areas (hereinafter — SPNAs) to ensure reliable protection of the snow leopard;
— ensuring adequate protection of the snow leopard during its breeding and migration periods.
