In 2009, the Environmental Movement «BIOM,» with support from the OSCE Center in Bishkek and the «School Project for the Use of Renewable Energy» (SPARE, Norway), implemented the project «Renewable Energy Sources (RES) — New Opportunities for Kyrgyzstan,» aimed at drawing the attention of the public, businesses, and government bodies to opportunities for implementing initiatives in the field of RES.
As part of this project, with assistance from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic, outdoor solar-powered lamps, a vacuum collector, and a solar cooker were installed at the Center for the Rehabilitation of Homeless Children under the Bishkek Mayor’s Office in 2009. The Center for the Rehabilitation of Homeless Children is a specialized institution for the psychological and social rehabilitation of children and adolescents. The Center relies on state subsidies and needs alternative energy sources due to a shortage of material and energy resources. All of these devices are able to convert solar energy into electricity and heat. The solar collector allows water to be heated for household use. The solar parabolic cooker can also be used for cooking and heating water. The solar lamps charge during the day and use the stored electricity to illuminate the area at night. The solar installations helped the Center solve a number of problems related to heat and electricity supply.
As part of the project, an exhibition, «Renewable Energy Sources in the Kyrgyz Republic,» was also organized in Bishkek, and extensive information campaigns were held in all regions of Kyrgyzstan for the public and media representatives, during which the population had the opportunity to learn about RES technologies available on the country’s market.
