As a result of the competition, facilities for water supply, sanitation, and hygiene will be renovated in 50 schools.
According to UNICEF, the project is being implemented using a three-star approach for phased improvement of conditions in educational institutions. The three-star approach aims to support school initiatives to change the sanitary and hygiene culture among children and spread best practices throughout the republic.
Each “star” is awarded to the school for achieving specific sanitation and hygiene indicators, including: regular hand washing with soap, availability of washrooms, cleanliness of sanitary facilities, and more.
A school receives “three stars” when it fully meets national standards for water, sanitation, and hygiene in schools. This approach was developed with the support of UNICEF and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and is already being successfully applied in several other countries.
The project “Improving Students’ Access to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene through Institutional Strengthening of the Sector in the Kyrgyz Republic” is part of the organization’s program on water supply, sanitation, and hygiene and is being implemented jointly with the Community Development and Investment Agency (ARIS) with financial support from the government of the Russian Federation.
