The Ecological Movement “BIOM” with the support of UNICEF announces the “Tap Taza” competition among educational organizations of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Relevance of the issue:

Currently, a large number of organizations in the Kyrgyz Republic are facing difficulties related to access to safe water and adequate sanitation conditions. Poor sanitary and hygienic conditions in educational organizations lead to increased morbidity of children from infectious diseases, such as diarrhea, parasitic diseases, and hepatitis A.

To mitigate the existing situation and address urgent problems in this area, a competition has been organized to identify and encourage positive practices implemented at the school level — by teachers, school administration, and individual educators in promoting hygiene issues, water safety, and adequate access to sanitation in educational organizations of the country. 

 

Competition Goals: To attract the attention of school administrations, teachers, and youth to the problem of access to safe water and adequate sanitary conditions, and the development of hygiene skills, through the identification and encouragement of positive practices implemented by students, teachers, and school administration.

 

Competition Tasks:

Identifying, promoting, and supporting positive practices and successful initiatives from schools, teachers, and students on:

• fostering sustainable hygiene behavior among schoolchildren;
• promoting successful low-cost infrastructure solutions in the field of sanitation, water supply, and hygiene in classrooms and school;
• promoting educational initiatives in the field of sanitation, water supply, and hygiene.

Teachers, students, and administration of secondary schools in Kyrgyzstan are invited to participate in the competition.

 

Nominations of competition works.

In each nomination, prizes will be awarded separately for rural and urban schools.

 

1. Nominating “Best Educational Initiative”. Applications for this nomination may be submitted in the form of descriptions and visual materials (photos, videos, stands) of lessons on sanitation, hygiene, and health preservation for schoolchildren, extracurricular and after-school activities (class hours, excursions, etc.)

To participate in the competition in this nomination, it is necessary to present:

• contact details of the school, teacher
• lesson plan, photos of visual materials,
• assessment of changes in student behavior as a result of the initiative,
• photos, videos reflecting the involvement of parents, students, and other groups in the lesson/event. (see Application Form)

 

2. Nominating “Best School Project/Action”. Applications for this nomination may be submitted in the form of descriptions of school actions, projects, club activities. For example, the work of school sanitary patrols, events and actions during sanitation week, KVN, etc.

To participate in the competition in this nomination, it is necessary to present:

• contact details of the school, teacher, class/student
• description of the problem (if possible – with photos/videos);
• description of the solution indicating its cost;
• description of the organization of work,
• photos, videos reflecting the involvement of parents, students, and other groups in the lesson/event. (see Application Form)

This nomination involves awarding both teachers and students.

 

3. Nominating “Best Infrastructure and Organizational Solution for Water Supply and Sanitation Problems in School/Class”.

To participate in the competition in this nomination, it is necessary to present:

• contact details of the school, teacher;
• description of the problem (if possible – with photos/videos);
• description of the solution indicating its cost (initiatives of teachers and/or school administration for toilet repairs, installation of sinks, organization of access to safe drinking water for students (if possible – with photos/videos);
• description of the organization of work;
• photos, videos reflecting the involvement of parents, students, and other groups in the lesson/event (see Application Form).

 

4. Nominating “Best Hygiene Traditions in School”.

This nomination implies a description of the existing traditions in school/class regarding the hygienic behavior of students (for example: collective hand washing in the mornings, use of individual cups/towels, soap, use of individual bottles for drinking water, etc.)

To participate in the competition in this nomination, it is necessary to present:

• contact details of the school, teacher;
• description of the tradition (if possible – with photos/videos), history of its origin, how and by whom it is supported, attitude of parents, teachers, and students, (see Application Form)

 

Procedure for conducting the competition

 

The competition is held from April 1 to May 1, 2015.

Entries are accepted in the aforementioned nominations in Kyrgyz and Russian languages.

Works will be accepted by the receiving committee in paper and/or electronic format until 18:00 on May 1 at:

The school has the right to submit applications for participation in the competition in several nominations.

All works are accepted only in accordance with the format (see Application Form), indicating the nomination. When preparing the work, the use of additional materials (slides, tables, graphs, video, and photo resources) is welcomed, but these materials must be formatted as attachments and indicated in the completed form.

Submitted materials may be returned to the teacher/school, but only upon prior request.

 

Attention! By submitting materials to the competition committee, you confirm the committee’s right to post them on the website www.taptaza.kg with a link to the source of information. If the applicant is not the author of the initiative/event, the authorship must be indicated. The competition committee reserves the right to publish paper and electronic versions of informational and educational materials based on competition works with a direct reference to the authors.

 

Information that must be included in the description of the work from the applicant (additional information can be found in the application form):

• Title of the work
• Nomination
• Full name of the author(s) of the work
• Name and address of the educational institution
• Full name of the supervisor
• Contact information (Addresses and phone numbers of the applicant/organization, the contact person)

 

Evaluation criteria for the works:

Works submitted for participation in the competition will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

• improvement of sanitary and hygienic conditions in the school and student health (number of children);
• potential for dissemination of practices in sanitation, hygiene, and access to clean water in school/class (including — ease of replication, low-cost);
• originality of the approach;
• quality and clarity of the presented visual materials;
• involvement of parents, local government, local administration, rural drinking water user associations, and other interested groups.

 

Composition of the Competition Committee (jury): The Competition Committee (jury) includes specialists from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Kyrgyz Republic, representatives of public and international organizations, independent experts, etc.

 

Awards: First, second, and third prizes in each nomination will be awarded special prizes. All finalists of the competition receive diplomas and souvenir gifts.

Recognition will be provided both for the school and directly for the author of the work.

For each school that takes prize-winning places, a package of all necessary means/materials for ensuring decent sanitary and hygienic conditions for students will be provided according to the water supply improvement calculator proposed on the website www.taptaza.kg.

 

Competition dates:

The competition starts on April 1, 2015.

The final deadline for submitting works for the competition is May 1, 2015.

Winners will be announced in Bishkek between May 12 – 20.
