On April 16, 2021, during the plenary session of the 75th session, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution initiated by the Kyrgyz Republic titled “Nature knows no borders.”
The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a new resolution initiated by the Kyrgyz Republic, titled “Nature knows no borders: transboundary cooperation – a key factor for biodiversity conservation, restoration and sustainable use.” The resolution was developed in partnership with the civil society of the country. BIOM, together with other public organizations, actively participated in its preparation.
The main goal of the resolution is to strengthen transboundary cooperation on biodiversity conservation through joint actions to ensure future generations a clean, safe, and stable environment, based on the rational use of natural resources under the principles of sustainable development and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
The resolution was developed in partnership with the civil society of the country. BIOM, together with other public organizations, actively participated in its preparation.
As noted by Ms. Anna Kirilenko, Executive Director of BIOM: “Civil society was directly involved in the preparation of the Resolution – from the birth of the idea on the topic to its promotion. We are glad that the issue of biodiversity was raised again on the agenda! It is important that finally the significance of natural ecosystems is recognized, especially in the context of climate regulation, where it is consistently underestimated. We tried to incorporate at least some frameworks of the theory of biotic regulation promoted by V.G. Gorshkov www.bioticregulation.ru Emil Dzhaparovich Shukurov http://www.biom.kg/teachers, http://www.biom.kg/teachers/5805f823744777dd5e3933a5, in continuation of Vernadsky’s work. In addition, the task was to emphasize the necessity and utmost importance of natural ecosystems for climate regulation and stabilization.”
The initiative from our country received broad support from a number of global environmental organizations, such as the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, the Convention on Migratory Species, the Ramsar Convention, and the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU), World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
During the adoption of the resolution, along with the general support from all states, 60 UN member states co-sponsored the Kyrgyz resolution: Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bhutan, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chile, PRC, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Grenada, Guatemala, Guinea, Guyana, India, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Lebanon, Lesotho, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritania, Mongolia, Morocco, Mozambique, Nauru, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Qatar, Romania, Russian Federation, Rwanda, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Senegal, Singapore, Tajikistan, Togo, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
In 2019-2020, a wide international campaign to promote the project was conducted by all foreign institutions of the Kyrgyz Republic, which included presentations of various formats in accredited countries, and coordination of the substantive part with UN member states.
In August 2020, a National presentation of the project was held for the public and the diplomatic corps in Bishkek.
