Today, July 2nd, in Montreal, Canada, the Scientific, Technical and Technological Consultation Meeting for the Illy-Shargan Gathering (WONTTK) has commenced its work.
The meeting will continue until July 7th. The main goal of the meeting is to prepare documents for the 14th meeting of the Convention on Biodiversity, which will take place in November in Egypt. From Kyrgyzstan, Anna Kirilenko and Bakhtygul Islanbekova from the Ecological Movement BIOM are participating in the meeting.
The chairperson of the meeting, Ms. Teresa Mundita S. Lim (Philippines), and the secretary of the Convention on Biodiversity, Ms. Christina Palmer, noted today that there is a significant challenge for countries to achieve the goals set for 2020. The scientific situation regarding biodiversity conservation is critical. In Europe and Central Asia, the conservation of natural ecosystems and wildlife is increasing, we are losing traditional knowledge about nature use, and the proportion of credit resources from nature use, such as agriculture, is growing. Neoclassical economic growth models do not take into account the limits of ecosystem sustainability. The risk of humanity cutting down trees is very real. To stop such trends, it is necessary for not only biologists and ecologists but also psychologists, philosophers, and others to participate.
