Have you made your contribution to mitigating the impacts of climate change?
On 10–12 May 2022 information events on climate change were held for young people, school representatives, local communities and civic activists of the Issyk-Kul region, as part of the large information campaign for collecting youth contributions to the NDC «Jasaibyz» — Together we can do more!» The «Jashyl Klimat» project runs these events together with the Youth Initiative «Jashyl Muun» and with the State Agency for Intellectual Property and Innovation under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic in all regions of Kyrgyzstan.
The first meeting was held on 10 May in the village of Bokonbaevo for representatives of the Ton and Jeti-Oguz districts.
The second meeting, on 11 May, was organised in Karakol for representatives of the Ak-Suu and Tyup districts and the town of Karakol.
The third meeting was held on 12 May in Cholpon-Ata, where representatives of the Issyk-Kul district and the town of Cholpon-Ata were invited.
Presentations were given to the young people by A. Kirilenko, “The problems of climate change in the world and in Kyrgyzstan. Opportunities and innovations for mitigating the impacts of climate change in the Kyrgyz Republic”, and by Z. Kretova, “Climate change in Kyrgyzstan. Figures and facts.”
Participants of the event were given questionnaires for collecting evidence of youth activity — youth contributions to the NDC — to be passed on to state bodies in order to show the real role of young people in solving environmental problems, including climate stabilisation.
The young people showed particular interest in questions of adaptation to climate change — what each person can do at their own local level to address a global problem, following the principle: think globally, act locally. As the participants note, one of the fundamental directions is the conservation of natural ecosystems, the regulators of climate stability on our planet, and therefore in the villages young people actively take part in planting trees, conserve water, take part in improving pastures and in raising the energy efficiency of schools, share their experience with other people and much more.
The problem of climate change is now becoming an increasingly serious challenge facing our country, and young people are one of the vulnerable groups.
In order to mitigate the impacts of climate change, Kyrgyzstan has taken on commitments under the Paris Agreement; this document is known as the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). At the same time young people are showing themselves to be an active actor in solving many environmental problems.
