Representatives of the BIOM Ecological Movement, the Global Forest Coalition and national environmental organizations took part in the National Presentation of the draft resolution of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly “Nature Knows No Borders”
On September 21, 2020, Bishkek hosted the National Presentation of the draft resolution of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly “Nature Knows No Borders: Transboundary Cooperation – A Key Factor in Conserving and Using Biodiversity” https://mfa.gov.kg/ru/osnovnoe-menyu/press-sluzhba/novosti/rezolyuciya-ga-oon-priroda-ne-znaet-granic .
The presentation was attended by representatives of diplomatic missions, country representations, and international, government and public organizations.
This draft resolution was submitted to the UN by the Kyrgyz Republic and aims at the adoption of joint urgent measures to protect the environment, conserve biodiversity and ensure environmental security. The draft will be submitted for consideration by the UN General Assembly in October of this year. The initiative was developed in close cooperation with and with the participation of public environmental organizations and reflects the invaluable importance of biodiversity for human existence and for sustaining the conditions for Life on the planet.
Speakers at the presentation included First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the KR Mr. Nuran Niyazaliev, UNDP Resident Representative in the KR Ms. Louise Chamberlain, and Executive Director of BIOM and Chair of the Council of the Global Forest Coalition Ms. Anna Kirilenko.
The Director of BIOM spoke at the resolution’s presentation in support of the initiative and emphasized that the unprecedented COVID-19 situation once again showed how fragile our seeming well-being is. There is no longer any doubt that the disruption of the integrity of the natural environment and modern environmental problems are the result of human activity. The anthropogenic burden on natural ecosystems has increased sharply, and they can no longer cope with it and function normally. According to the professional calculations of ecologist scientists (Odum, Gorshkov, Shukurov and others), stabilizing environmental parameters requires 60% of the planet’s territory to be covered by natural (wild) ecosystems.
