ADOPTION OF THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION ON BIODIVERSITY — A HISTORIC MOMENT FOR KYRGYZSTAN

ADOPTION OF THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION ON BIODIVERSITY — A HISTORIC MOMENT FOR KYRGYZSTAN

On April 16, 2021, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution “Nature Knows No Boundaries: Transboundary Cooperation as a Key Factor in the Conservation, Restoration and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity”, initiated by the Kyrgyz Republic.

Experts of the BIOM ecological movement took an active part in developing this resolution together with government bodies and civil society. As BIOM executive director Anna Kirilenko notes, the adoption of this resolution is a major international success for Kyrgyzstan and an important step in developing global cooperation on biodiversity conservation and addressing the challenges of climate change.

Civil society took a direct part in preparing the resolution — from the birth of the idea to its promotion. We are glad that the topic of biodiversity was raised on the agenda once again! It is important that the significance of natural ecosystems is finally recognized, especially in the context of climate regulation, where it is constantly underestimated. We tried to weave into the text at least some of the framework of the theory of biotic regulation promoted by V.G. Gorshkov (www.bioticregulation.ru) and E.J. Shukurov (http://www.biom.kg/teachers, http://www.biom.kg/teachers/5805f823744777dd5e3933a5)
continuing the work of Vernadsky.

In addition, the goal was to emphasize the necessity and utmost importance of natural ecosystems for regulating and stabilizing the climate.

The main goal of the resolution is to strengthen transboundary cooperation on biodiversity conservation through joint action to ensure future generations have a clean, safe and stable environment, with rational use of natural resources based on the principles of sustainable development and implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Our country’s initiative received broad support from a number of global environmental organizations, such as the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, the Convention on Migratory Species, the Ramsar Convention and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and 60 member states co-sponsored Kyrgyzstan’s resolution.
