Meetings were held in a number of cities across the country with the participation of more than 250 people. In June, broad public discussions of the draft State Program for Biodiversity Conservation through 2040 and the Action Plan for 2025-2030 were held across Kyrgyzstan. Meetings took place in Cholpon-Ata, Naryn, Osh, Jalal-Abad and Bishkek with the participation of more than 250 people. Representatives of regional departments of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision, the scientific community, specially protected natural areas, forestries, local authorities, pasture users, environmental and women’s organizations, youth, and the media took part in the dialogue.
The main purpose of the discussions is to take into account the opinions of all stakeholders and finalize the documents that will define the country’s environmental policy for the next 15 years. The State Program and action plan are being created by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the KR with the support of UNDP, in partnership with BIOM and the “Resources and Consulting” STC. The initiative is aimed at forming the country’s long-term strategy in the field of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. The documents reflect current challenges and priorities in environmental protection, and highlight the connection between the state of natural resources and the quality of life of the population, sustainable development of agriculture and tourism, and preservation of cultural heritage.
Above all, they are being shaped through an open and broad public dialogue. “We conducted a study of the state of ecosystems. Based on the data analysis, we created a map of priority territories requiring special attention. It turned out that not all valuable areas are currently protected, and work to preserve them must continue,” noted Ilya Domashov, an expert on the project.
The Program and action plan are being developed based on real data, and the proposals of discussion participants will form the basis for adjusting and finalizing the strategic documents.
