Biodiversity Conservation

In 2014, the environmental organization "BIOM," together with the "Respublika" parliamentary faction, held an off-site meeting devoted to the region's environmental problems, including issues of tourism and the Issyk-Kul biosphere zone. Environmental recommendations presented by "BIOM" were discussed at the event, and instructions were adopted to address these problems.

The project aimed to study and assess the natural features and biodiversity of the Kara-Koo territory in Kyrgyzstan, with the goal of expanding the network of protected natural areas within the Issyk-Kul Biosphere Reserve. As part of the project, scientific research was carried out, as well as the development of recommendations for the management and protection of this territory, with the participation of the local population and stakeholders. The project contributed to more effective protection of biodiversity and natural resources in this area.

Development of and participation in the discussion of information and analytical blocks for the National Strategy for Snow Leopard Conservation.

As part of this activity, the environmental organization "BIOM" actively participated in developing information and analytical blocks that were subsequently incorporated into the National Strategy for the Conservation of Biological Diversity of the Kyrgyz Republic until 2020. In addition, the organization took an active part in developing the 5th National Report on the Conservation of Biological Diversity of Kyrgyzstan for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

The project was aimed at supporting the initiative of students to expand and deepen their knowledge of sustainable development, and to acquire skills in forest ecology, forestry, and forest protection methods, and forest-ecosystem restoration, contributing to environmental education, forestry education, and professional orientation through the Republican Children's and Youth Competition "Zhash Tokoichu." The project resulted in the organization of a multilateral Republican Nomination Committee as part of the National Junior Competition, the preparation of the regulations for the Republican Children's and Youth Competition "Zhash Tokoichu" and its approval by the SAEPF and the MES of the Kyrgyz Republic, and the holding of the competition and the awarding of its winners as part of the celebration of "Forest Worker's Day."

The conference was organized on the initiative of the Global Forest Coalition (GFC) and the Environmental Movement "BIOM," together with IUFRO, and with support from the Zh. Balasagyn Kyrgyz National University.

The project to support Kyrgyzstan's environmental organizations and build their capacity in biodiversity conservation and climate stabilization is an initiative aimed at strengthening and developing environmental non-governmental organizations in Kyrgyzstan with the goal of improving natural resource management and addressing climate change. The project provides financial, technical, and organizational support to organizations working in environmental protection and climate stability.

The project aimed to build the capacity of communities to preserve plant and animal species listed in the Red Book, as well as natural ecosystems as their habitats, through a series of educational meetings, seminars with forest rangers and local decision-makers, and others, as well as the publication and dissemination of materials on the conservation of Red Book species.

The project aimed to build the capacity of local communities in Kyrgyzstan to preserve biodiversity by creating a network of wildlife micro-reserves and conducting a broad campaign on the role of biodiversity.

As part of the project, work was organized to raise the awareness of employees of regional forestry administrations and forest enterprises, and representatives of local communities, about joint forest management through the publication of a package of information materials and the holding of 6 trainings in local communities located in zones where floodplain (Naryn region), spruce (Issyk-Kul region), and nut-fruit (Jalal-Abad region) forests grow.

The project carried out independent monitoring of the programme of work on forest biodiversity conservation in Kyrgyzstan.

From 2005 to 2006, the environmental organization "Biom" actively participated in preparing and publishing a new edition of the Red Book of Kyrgyzstan. The Red Book is an important tool for protecting the country's biodiversity and natural resources. It contains information on rare and vulnerable species of animals, plants, and fungi threatened with extinction.

This project is an information campaign aimed at raising awareness and understanding of biodiversity in the Central Asian region. The project's main goal is to promote the importance of biodiversity conservation and sustainable natural resource management in the Western Tien Shan.

From 2001 to 2005, the Environmental Movement "BIOM" conducted trainings and education for residents of villages located in the buffer zones of the Sary-Chelek, Besh-Aral, and Aksu-Zhabagly reserves. These events were aimed at increasing environmental literacy and awareness of local communities on nature conservation and sustainable resource use.

The expert meeting on the natural-resource management sector is an event at which specialists and experts discuss and analyze the current state and problems related to natural-resource management in a particular region or country.

An event aimed at discussing and identifying the main factors leading to the loss of forested areas and forest degradation in Kyrgyzstan.

Since 1998, the Environmental Movement "BIOM" has actively participated in the work of environmental groups, implementing projects and activities on biodiversity conservation and the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Kyrgyzstan.

Since 1998, projects based on the principles of the ecosystem approach have been implemented in Kyrgyzstan, aimed at preventing the degradation of natural ecosystems, their conservation, and sustainable use.

The campaign was implemented together with the NGO "Tuulgan Zherim"; seeds and shoots were collected for the Frunze forestry enterprise.

Since 1994, "BIOM" has organized campaigns in defense of biological diversity: "Let's Help Birds Survive," "Plant Your Own Forest," and others, and takes part in organizing the annual environmental campaign "Parks March."
