Improving Emergency Preparedness and Reducing Disaster Risk among Older People in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan

The project “Improving Emergency Preparedness and Reducing Disaster Risk among Older People in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan” was implemented between 2009 and 2010 in two Central Asian countries. This project was part of broader efforts to strengthen public preparedness for emergencies and reduce the risk of natural disasters in the region.

The project’s main goal was to increase preparedness and reduce the vulnerability of older people to natural disasters. The project provided training and information to older citizens so that they would know how to act in emergencies, including earthquakes, floods, or other natural disasters.

The project was implemented with the active involvement of HelpAge International Central Asia and included the following components:
Training and information campaigns: older people were provided with training materials, and information campaigns were held to raise their awareness of precautions and actions to take in the event of natural disasters.
Development of emergency plans: older people were helped to develop their own emergency plans, taking into account their specific needs and physical limitations.
Equipment and resources: in some cases, the necessary resources and equipment were provided so that older people could respond effectively to emergencies.

The project helped increase the resilience of older citizens to potential natural disasters and strengthened their ability to protect themselves and their loved ones in an emergency. This was an important effort to ensure the safety and care of the most vulnerable group in the region.
