Emil Japarovich Shukurov: Scientist, Artist, and Defender of Nature

Emil Japarovich Shukurov (January 19, 1938 – August 23, 2019) was an outstanding Kyrgyz scientist, artist, and passionate defender of nature. His biography and scientific contribution, artistic talent, and public activity left an indelible mark on the history of Kyrgyzstan and the world.

Biography and Scientific Career

Emil Shukurov was born on January 19, 1938, and was educated at the Kyrgyz State University and Moscow State University. He held a Candidate of Biological Sciences degree and a Doctor of Geographical Sciences degree. For many years, he worked at the Kyrgyz Institute of Microbiology and Hygiene, and also served as director of the Institute of Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic.

His contribution to science included creating the Zoogeographic Map of Kyrgyzstan and participating in the Atlas project of the Kyrgyz SSR. Emil Shukurov was also the initiator and leader of many biodiversity conservation and nature protection projects, attracting funding from global funds, including the GEF-World Bank.

Artist of Nature and Caricaturist

Emil Shukurov was not only a scientist but also a talented artist. His paintings attracted attention with their expressiveness and vivid colors, reflecting the beauty of nature. However, his most recognizable works became caricatures known as “izobasni” (illustrated fables). These ironic works of art impressed with their deep meaning and often appeared at conferences and seminars.

Defender of Nature and Public Figure

Emil Shukurov was a passionate defender of wildlife and the organizer of the first ecological movement “Aleyne” in Kyrgyzstan. As part of his public activities, he implemented about 60 projects, including the creation of three nature reserves.

He also worked actively within the BIOM Ecological Movement. It is important to note that Emil Shukurov was a wonderful mentor, inspiring young ecologists with his knowledge and experience.

Emil Japarovich Shukurov passed away on August 23, 2019, but his legacy as a scientist, artist, and passionate defender of nature continues to live on and inspire future generations.
